Message from the Registrar

As the pharmacy profession welcomes a newly constituted 25-member Council collective, the Office of the Registrar has geared itself towards supporting Council achieve its five-year strategic plan. Mr Vincent Tlala, the Registrar/CEO of the South African Pharmacy Council, briefly takes stock of the path ahead in article.

Council Decisions

This article presents a summary of selected matters discussed and decisions taken by the South African Pharmacy Council (hereafter “Council”) during its meetings held on 26 and 28 July and 18/19 October 2023. Other matters on the operations of the Office of the Registrar and Council are covered in the articles featured in this issue of the Pharmaciae.

introducing the new Council

Following the conclusion of the 2023 Council Elections, the Honourable Minister of Health appointed further Council members in terms of Section 5(b-e) of the Pharmacy Act, 53 of 1974, and constituted Council accordingly for the 2024-2028 term of office in December 2023.

Fees payable to Council 2024

In December 2022, the Honourable Minister of Health gazetted the Regulations relating to fees payable to the South African Pharmacy Council, which regulations capped fee revisions to the headline inflation at the request of the profession and other stakeholders. Statistics South Africa indicated that the October 2023 headline inflation was 5,9%.

What’s New in Legislation

Legislation having an impact on Pharmacy and the practice environment is continuously updated in response to changing the environment and other factors. We endeavour to include all legislative amendments and new/proposed legislation in each issue of the e-Pharmaciae. This edition looks at the legislation published between January 2023 and August 2023.

Council participates in industry conferences

The South African Pharmacy Council honoured several invitations to attend conferences hosted by the profession since the start of 2023. These conferences presented the SAPC with an opportunity to engage with pharmacists, pharmacy support personnel and other industry stakeholders.

CFI acts against unprofessional conduct

Council robustly guards the public’s right to quality pharmaceutical services, while upholding the good image of the pharmacy profession, by investigating alleged unprofessional conduct by registered persons and bringing disciplinary processes against those found to be endangering public health and/or bringing into disrepute the good name of the pharmacy profession. Approved Providers and Courses

Members of the public and the profession are advised that, as at April 2024, the below list constitute the only approved providers of pharmacy education and training, and the courses approved/accredited by the South African Pharmacy Council.

registered assessors

The South African Pharmacy Council maintains a register of assessors and moderators of pharmacy education and training in line with the Regulations relating to the registration of persons and maintenance of registers (GNR. 1160/2000). Included is the latest list of Registered Assessors and Moderators as at April 2024.

2024 FIP WORLD CONGRESS IN CAPE TOWN

Pharmacy in South Africa is set to welcome the world in September 2024. The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) will be hosting their 82nd World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Cape Town from 1 – 4 September 2024. The theme for this Congress is: Innovating for the Future of Health Care.
